8 Summer Foot Care Tips You Need to Know!
Summertime brings with it a whole new set of problems for your feet. When outdoor temperatures are hot and your feet are enclosed in tight shoes, your feet become the target of a variety of potential foot maladies including eczema, psoriasis, blisters, fungal infections, and socially embarrassing “smelly feet”. The good news is by taking a few simple foot care tips, you can keep your feet healthy and odor free throughout the summer! Here are some summer foot care tips you need to know:
1. Wash your feet frequently.
When you’re wearing tight shoes, foot perspiration can be a problem. Where there’s moisture, there’s the potential for a fungal infection. Plus, you’re more prone to colonization with bacteria that can produce odor. Wash your feet several times a day if necessary, but be sure to dry your feet thoroughly before putting your shoes back on.
2. Make friends with a good foot powder.
Foot powders help to soak up excessive moisture that can breed fungi and bacteria. Plus, a lightly scented powder make your feet feel refreshed. There are a variety of foot powders on the market, both scented and unscented as well as foot powders with antibacterial and antifungal properties. If you’re in a bind, you can use corn starch to keep your feet dry and moisture free. You probably have some right now in your kitchen cabinet!
3. Let your feet breathe.
Consider wearing an open sandal in the summer to keep your feet dry and give them a chance to “breathe”. Put away your hot, heavy boots any any other constrictive shoe that might promote foot perspiration. Beware of sandals with thongs that fit between the toes since these can be irritating to the foot and cause blister formation.
4. Treat your feet.
If you do lots of walking on your job or as recreation, treat yourself to a professional foot massage every few weeks. It’s a great stress reliever!
5. Change your socks frequently.
You want to avoid the accumulation of moisture in your socks which can make you more susceptible to a foot bacterial or fungal infection. Change into clean, dry socks several times a day in warm weather.
6. Don’t forget the sunscreen.
Many people don’t realize feet are subject to sunburn just like the rest of your body. Use a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 if you’re going to be barefoot outdoors or have your feet exposed through open sandals.
7. Beware of locker rooms.
Locker rooms are a common source of fungi and bacteria that can set up a foot infection. Always wear sandals or some other foot covering when walking around in a public locker room.
8. Get good foot support.
If you’re a runner or avid walker, invest in an exercise show that gives you good support to avoid potential injury. Buy a shoe designed for your particular sport. If you’re a runner, an aerobic shoe won’t work. When you are stepping out in the sun in a sleeveless top or short dress, your arms and legs are directly exposed to the harmful UV rays of the sun causing tanning and rashes.
Apply a sunscreen
Are you plagued with those red rashes on your arms due to the dreadful heat? Dermatologist, says, “If you are planning to wear dresses or tops, always remember to apply a sunscreen with SPF 30 + before you step out in the sun.”
Use a lightweight moisturiser
During the evenings, apply a lightweight moisturiser with mint and coconut milk extracts. Keep fungal infections, the accumulation of dirt and bacteria away by using an anti-bacterial soap to wash your armpits. Before going out, remember to keep a deodorant at hand. The application of a mint-based moisturiser at night will cool the rashes and reduce tanning and instantly cool the skin, keeping it refreshed for the entire day.
Take care of your elbows
Most of us neglect our elbows and so they remain darker compared to the other parts of our body. Scrub your elbows at least twice in a week to get rid of the dead tissues. Dr Sharad advises to rub a slice of lemon every alternate day to your elbows to keep them clean and fair. Alternately, you can use mustard oil or coconut oil and lime.
Soak your feet in lukewarm water
Dermatologist, says, “Soak your feet regularly in lukewarm water to ease the tiredness and get rid of the dust and pollution.”
Before stepping out in the sun, make sure you have applied a generous amount of sunscreen on your feet as well.
Use a foot powder
Foot powders are the best way to soak up excessive moisture during the hot months. A lightly-scented powder will help you stay refreshed the entire day and ease you from the trouble of ‘smelly feet’.
Go for a pedicure
Head in for a foot massage once every week. This will keep your foot clean. Trim your toe nails to avoid dirt and dust from accumulating under your toe nails.
Due to the harmful rays of the sun, it is important to keep your hands moisturised the entire day to avoid wrinkles and calluses. “Whenever you are going out in the sun, wear gloves to protect them from the heat outside.”

Use a sunscreen before you go out in the mornings and afternoons. Dr Sharad advises to use a hand scrub to remove the dead skin from your hands at least once a week.
Use a hand cream
“Use a rich moisturising hand cream containing emollient plant oils and anti-inflammatory ingredients to pamper your hands, nails and cuticles.”
Give your denims and trousers a miss this summer and opt for skirts and dresses instead. But before you go out in them, make sure to keep your knees spotless and clean.
Exfoliating is a must. To keep your knees soft and smooth, be sure to make exfoliation a part of your daily skin care routine. “When you go for a shower, make sure to clean the area around your knees with a pumice stone to get rid of dead skin and dirt.”
Your knees tend to get dark every day due to exposure to the sun and the accumulation of dirt. Slice a lemon in half and rub it on your knees before you shower. Lemon contains citric acid which acts as a natural lightener and exfoliator.
